Summer is a wonderful time for those who dye fibers naturally. This week the Goldenrod has has begun to bloom with bright yellow flowers.
One afternoon I set about collecting Goldenrod. I only like to collect a little from each spot to insure there will be flowers there next year and so flowers will remain for the wasps and bees.
After picking, it is time to remove the flowers from the leaves. It takes a while yet is one of the steps needed to produce lovely yellow dyes.
After prepping the dye the yarn goes into the dye pot, soaking up the lovely yellow color extracted from the flowers.
All washed and dried, the yarn retains a beautiful yellow color.
A second batch is currently in the dye pot. I am taking advantage of all the fresh flowers currently in bloom.

One of the great things about knitting is that it is a fine craft just made for travel. I have knit through mountains, deserts, large cities, small islands and quite a bit on ferries. Each year I knit a number of pieces while traveling along the Trans Canada Highway. Today was one of those days. I set a goal to finish this knit hat before reaching the summit of the Rogers Pass, and met my goal. It seemed perfect to shoot this very Canadian hat at the summit of a well known Canadian pass.
The hat is made of 100% Canadian produced and milled wool, dyed by hand in natural dyes , and knit by hand (on location!).
Just check out the view I get to knit to!
The hat will be available on http://www.handmade-canada.com in the next few days.
Today I am working away on cuffs. In the spirit of summer, I have two beach inspired cuffs in progress. The cuffs are handknit in cotton with hand carved wooden toggles. They are then hand beaded for a boho aesthetic perfect for summer.
It seems perfect to be beading these cuffs while on the coast, so close to the ocean I can hear ship horns blast.
